Liverpool winger Toni Silva has joined Northampton Town on a month long loan and went straight into the squad for Tuesday night’s home clash with AFC Wimbledon.

The 18-year-old Portuguese player has moved to Sixfields on a youth loan, having impressed for Liverpool’s reserve and youth teams.

Silva can play on either the left or right wing and is also capable of playing up front, with Town boss Aidy Boothroyd delighted to have been able to bring him in.

He said: "We are very grateful to everyone at Liverpool for allowing us to borrow Toni and hopefully all parties will benefit from this move.

"He can play on either wing, he is very direct, has a lot of pace, a lot of trickery and he is a goal threat as well.

"I am sure he will prove to be an asset for us."

He came on after 74 minutes in Northampton's 1-0 win.

If a dose of the cobblers can sort out his sometimes bad attitude, this could work out well.

I think he looks a prospect. Him and Sterling are two youngsters that look exciting and tricky.

Luis Suarez can be a d**khead at times, but he is an excellent player.

Hopefully this guy has that sort of spice in his locker.

Toni Silva made his Northampton Town debut and set up the winner as the Cobblers earned a vital 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night.

Entering the field as a 74th minute substitute, the Academy youngster made a big impression as Aidy Boothroyd's side gained a much needed three points.

In a dazzling run, Silva beat three players and after seeing his shot saved, Luke Gutteridge headed home from close range.

A delighted Boothroyd said: "Toni Silva is a very good player and he has certainly got Premier League quality."

The Portugese winger is on loan at the League Two outfit on an initial 28 day period.

AIDY BOOTHROYD has revealed he still wants to bring a right-winger to Sixfields but has confirmed the club will not attempt to re-sign Liverpool wide man Toni Silva.

Cobblers boss Boothroyd praised the Portuguese forward, who scored a vital goal in a precious 1-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge in March, for the role he played in helping keep Town in the Football League last season.

The club are resigned to losing Michael Jacobs this summer, with the 20-year-old showing no intention of signing the contract he has been offered to extend his time at Northampton and a number of clubs pursuing the midfielder.

Alex Nicholls has been brought in from Walsall to play primarily as a striker, although he can operate on either wing, as can Jake Robinson, who has another year left on his deal at Sixfields.

Boothroyd, however, still wants to make another addition to increase his options in the final third.

“I don’t think we’ll go back for Toni Silva,” he said. “I’m really grateful to him for and for his contribution in getting us out of trouble last season but I don’t think that’s going to be an option we follow up on.

Liverpool can today confirm Toni Silva has completed a transfer to Barnsley, subject to confirmation from the relevant footballing bodies.

The 18-year-old midfielder joined Anfield from Benfica in the summer of 2009 and spent the latter part of the 2011-12 campaign on loan at League Two outfit Northampton Town.

Everyone at LFC would like to wish Toni all the very best for the future.

So, that's the end of Toni Silva with us then. Good luck to the lad. I always thought he looked decent.

Gutted Toni has been let go! what's the point in developing and bringing in young talent if we let them go before they hit full potential? I really thought Toni could develop and be a star for us

The point is bringing through dozens of youngsters and hoping that one or two make it through to the first team.

If Silva isn't up to it, then he isn't up to it.

I doubt that the likes of Borrell would be wrong based on coaching these players day in day out and that you would be right based on whatever you have seen of him.
