I am not going to pretend to know anything about Anzhi, other than they've got loadsa money and i think they've signed one or two big names.(Samuel E'to?)

As for us, I can see a few unusual names on the teamsheet for this one. I expect Jones will keep his place and the likes of Carra, Coates, Downing, Enrique, Robinson, Morgan, Assaidi and Yessil to get some time on the pitch.
I try to get excited for these EL games but find it difficult. I used to love the old UEFA cup but this is a poor replacement. I hope we win (mainly to keep the run going before the blueshite) but won't be slitting my wrists if we don't

You will recognise Guus Hiddink, Lassana Diarra, Yuri Zhirkov, Ewerton, Roberto Carlos and Chris Samba in their entourage - and Samuel Eto'o of course.

They are a good side and I expect a tough game.

I would expect a mix of fringe players, youngsters and a couple of seniors.

They're not a bad side, and are splashing the cash to improve year on year. If we go with the same sort of lineup we've had in previous Europa games I can see us losing this one, but our first team should be able to beat them.

Carlos is their technical director now. He was player-coach or similar.

I think we might see a couple of the first team players for this game maybe gerrard, Allen, Johnson. I would say Suarez but given his travels last week I expect he will get the night off.

I'd go with something like...

Jones
Johnson carra Coates Robinson
Henderson Allen gerrard
Shelvey Morgan assaidi

I don't think Suarez,Gerrard,Agger,Johnson or Reina will be involved.

Jones

Wisdom
Carra
Coates
Enrique

Sahin
Henderson
Shelvey

Assaidi
Downing
Yesil (I hope him and not Pacheco).

I think it's best to play a stronger side in the home games when there is no traveling involved. Hopefully get points on the board. Then use more of the youth / squad players in the away games when the traveling becomes a factor.

Just read that article that's crazy what they are doing there!

Building a star studded team in a war zone. If they carry on spending like they are they could be serious champions league contenders in the near future.
Seems there is some decent teams coming from that region. The Ukrainians shaktar look impressive.

I wouldn't expect Downing to play. Perhaps he will be on the bench, but what he said recently seemed to drop him further down the pecking order.

There is an article here on Anzhi:

I agree. We need to play some of the best players. Although I'm not a big fan of Europa league I'd still like to see us progress. With maybe the likes of city or Chelsea joining us it will get interesting!

I would struggle to worry about our status in the group. The Europa League is so uninspiring.
