Stewart Downing signed for Liverpool from Aston Villa in July 2011 for a reported £20m fee. The winger is also a full England international, having thirty-two caps to his name.
Downing started his career with hometown club Middlesbrough. He made his debut in April 2002 against Ipswich in a Premiership match. He went on to play 206 times for Boro, including a UEFA Cup final appearance against Sevilla in 2006. He was unable to collect a winner's medal as Boro lost the game 4-0, however.
He made his England debut in March 2005 during a friendly against the Netherlands at Villa Park when he appeared as a second-half substitute, coming on for fellow winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.
The winger left Middlesbrough in the summer of 2009 and spent the following two years with Aston Villa. He made 75 appearances and scored 8 goals for the Villains before joining the Reds.
