Ryan Babel joined Liverpool in July 2007 in a deal worth more than ?10million for a 5 year contract.

His Liverpool debut came on August 11, 2007 when he appeared as a second-half substitute against Aston Villa.

It wasn't long before our new number 19 was hitting the back of the net, making two Derby County defenders look silly before lashing home at the Anfield Road end on September 1.

Another nine goals followed in his first year with us including an audacious flick in an 8-0 Champions League drubbing of Besiktas.

Still a raw talent for us. Alot of fans tipping that this will be his best season yet. Still so much to come from him. Will be a great asset for us in the nesxt few seasons. Hope he gets more games under his belt then we will see what a hell of a player he really is.

One of his key problems last season was that he couldn't last the full 90 minutes, which is why he was used sparingly. He has definitely improved a lot in that aspect but I think he still has a little way to go, which is why he still hasn't nailed down a regular starting place yet.

If Babel wants more games he should try a bit harder when he comes on. He didn't do enough last night for me to show why he should be picked ahead of Riera.

I do feel sorry for Babel but with the form Riera's shown since signing it's hard to drop him. We could possibly give him a shot on the right, I'm sure he'd cause defences more problems than Kuyt.

To be fair PSV did kick lumps out of him when he came on, but it does show that maybe he's not quite ready for the more physical opponents, which you'll come across a fair bit in the Premiership.

I'm not writing him off just yet though, he's still young & has shown great potential. Given a bit more time I'm sure he will grow into a quality player.

A more laid back player i have yet to see as even when he scores he still looks as chilled as an Amsterdam coffee shop regular !
I know Ryan favours the left so he can keep cutting inside but i wouldnt mind seeing Bert on the left and Ryan on the right for a game, but having said that this would probably lead to Rafa having a breakdown due to the lack of defensive play.

He is only 11st 7 ?

Anyway, it's a shame to not see him starting because I believe he is one of our best players especially on his day.

This is a fantastic problem we have. Riera has been fantastic, and Ryan Babel is a sensational player. We can't have both of them on the park though, so they are really going to have to put their best foot forward if they want to get on the park for the reds.

Not sure why Yossi came on for Riera instead of Babel yesterday tho....

Good performance from Babel tonight, certainly won't have done his chances any harm.

Babel was excellent last night, the only player who really looked like he might break the Pompey defence down.

I thought Kuyt was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

And what about big Sami!!

Rafa has come out and said that he wants to develop Babel as a striker this season. This was said when he bought Riera and that this signing would free up Babel so that he can gain more experience upfront.
