Thatcher aid Ingham won't apologise to Liverpool fans

Sir Bernard Ingham, Margaret Thatcher's former chief of press, has refused to apologise to Liverpool fans after blaming them for the Hillsborough disaster and telling them to 'shut up' about the tragedy.
Ingham was challenged by the Liverpool Echo after a letter he wrote to Reds fan Graham Skinner in 1996 was handed to the Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG).
In the letter, sent after the Jimmy McGovern documentary about the tragedy was screened, he said: “I have, however, one suggestion to make: for its own good, Liverpool – with the Heysel disaster in the background – should shut up about Hillsborough.
“Nothing can now bring back those who died – innocent people who, by virtue of being in the ground early, had their lives crushed out of them by a mob surging in late.”
When challenged by the paper to take back his comments following the Hillsborough Independent Panel report cleared Liverpool fans of any blame for the 1989 disaster which claimed 96 lives, Ingham asked: “What have I to apologise for?”
HFSG chair Margaret Aspinall said an apology from Ingham would make no difference.
“Just like the woman, he is not for turning. We know the truth and deep down he knows the truth, he just can’t face it.
“We have proved that he’s wrong.”
