Allen signed for his new club after a 5pm deadline on Friday, and without Premier League registration needed Swansea's permission to play.
Still upset by Allen's departure, the Welsh club refused Liverpool's request and the midfielder was forced to watch from the stands.
Liverpool won, with Andy Carroll amongst the goalscorers, and Allen will now join the Wales squad to face Bosnia in midweek.
His debut for his new club is now likely to be the first Premier League game of the season against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns next Saturday.
Although annoyed he was unable to integrate Allen into the squad, Brendan Rodgers was pleased that the £15 million signing was finally complete.
"Joe will fit in very well. I like technically gifted players and I like good people, and he is a very humble young guy. He is a very talented boy," said Rodgers.

EddieCSun 12/08/12 at 20:57 Why does a player need to be registered with the Premier League to play in a friendly anyway? Surely that's outside their jurisdiction
theanfieldpaddySun 12/08/12 at 20:58 but as we all know the Fa just make it up as they go along
OlivavuSun 12/08/12 at 21:03 The papers went through after the deadline so he couldn't play until they are confirmed tomorrow morning. Usual red tape nonsense. Swansea were a team I didn't mind before, but I will be hoping they go down now. And I am also delighted they didn't get Shelvey on loan.

I still don't understand how that affects a friendly game though? Doesn't make sense to me.
OlivavuSun 12/08/12 at 21:13 Friendlies are ratified and officiated by FA officials in this country and they need to register players for them. As he was registered with Swansea he wasn't able to play for us until the papers went through. Trialists can play with their clubs permission if they have one. Otherwise they are free to do whatever when not contracted. I think it has insurance issues as well. Load of red tape garbage, as ever.
InthenetSun 12/08/12 at 22:08 Just take six points off of them this coming season that will teach them! Allen to score!

If i dont provide a postcode for the address they wont be signed!!!! ridiculous it didnt matter last year but now it does ,there is too much red tape in football
KK73Mon 13/08/12 at 05:55 We have taken probably the best two employees they've ever had or close. I mean when last season came to the end it just seemed obvious that as long as they could keep Brendan and Allen they would have no problems staying up. We have only shattered their dreams. They've just responded a little, but hey its understandable.
MentalTue 14/08/12 at 19:23 Que Sera, Sera. But I hope we thrash them in the league
