Suarez re-opens racism row

By waz112003, Wed 18/07/12 at 12:20

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez believes the eight-game ban he received last season was down to Manchester United's "political power".

The 25-year-old Uruguay forward was handed the suspension and a £40,000 fine in December after being found guilty of racially abusing United defender Patrice Evra in a Barclays Premier League match.

Speaking on Uruguayan television show 'RR.Gol', Suarez said: "They were very tough days to me. I am not used to showing what I really feel, but the trial week was very difficult. I also cried alongside my wife.

"People at Liverpool are sure that it was a way that Manchester United used to put me out of the team and stop Liverpool. In England, Manchester United's political power is strong and you must respect that and shut your mouth."

The controversy was re-ignited in February, when Suarez seemingly refused Evra's handshake as the teams conducted their traditional pre-match greeting.

Suarez claims his actions were misunderstood.

He said: "In England, it was shown the moment when I passed in front of him, but they didn't see that he had his hand low before.

"Only the media in Uruguay and Spain showed that I wanted to shake his hand.

"Previously, I had promised my wife, the manager and the directors that I was going to shake hands with Evra. There was a chance for the teams not to shake hands like in a game between QPR and Chelsea [following the Anton Ferdinand-John Terry racism row], but I told them I was to shake hands with him.

"'Why not?', I thought, because I had no problems with him. I had been punished because of him, but I had no problems with shaking hands."

Speaking at length about the subject for the first time, Suarez reflected on a difficult period in his career.

"The trial [disciplinary hearing] was so complicated for me," he said. "I had to go to Manchester in a taxi for the trial. I got up at seven in the morning and I came home at nine at night.

"I was exhausted, I was so tired. I wanted to cry, and kick all the things around me.

"I came home and I wanted to do all that, but I couldn't because my daughter was at home. There were really complicated days, and then things became harder after the punishment."

It's good to hear Luis Suarez come out & said he wanted to shake hands of Patrice Evra but he should have said this before. Why didn't Patrice Evra said on English channel rather on French channel. Here's the clip of who's refusing to shake hands who's?

Not sure it was worth a new thread but the old saying "let sleeping dogs lie" springs to mind. There will be plenty of indignation flying around should the FA fail to charge JT.

If they dont charge him and he gets 10 weeks then the FA is a farce when it comes to stamping out racism.

This case is different. And they will use that when defending a future decision not to bring any charges.

It was taken into a court of law and he was acquitted.

Suarez v Evra was all done through the FA.

yes in a court of law u need OVERWHELMING evidence , but as a several journos have said in the Suarez case for FA to find a guilty verdict they only need it appear more believable he did it , there is very little burden of proof . In the court case he admitted saying it but the evidence wasnt enough that he directly said it to Ferdinand. The key evidence was the video and the lip readers even said they couldnt tell if he said it directly as they couldn't confirm 1 critical word in the sentence he said .

But in the Suarez case the FA deemed Evra more believable than Suarez and so he was guilty. That is the critical point. So if they use that then he admits saying it so he must be believed and get sanctioned.

If you mean Suarez I think it is because he lacks intelligence. He is a great footballer but not the sharpest mind. He has been a little naive in thinking that what he says on Uruguayan TV would not be reported in Britain. It does show it still irks him.

If on the other hand you meant WAZ, anything that can be cut and pasted

Liverpool handled the Suarez racism case 'pathetically', says Hamann

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has slammed the club's handling of the Luis Suarez racism case and called for the striker to "concentrate on football".

The Uruguayan was banned for eight games by an FA tribunal after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a match at Anfield in October.

The forward was strongly backed by the club and then manager Kenny Dalglish, even after the former Ajax man failed to shake Evra's hand prior to the return fixture at Old Trafford later in the season.

Suarez stated in a recent interview that the "misunderstanding" between he and Evra was: "all arranged against me again, as it had happened with the punishment".

But Hamann, who made over 200 appearances for the Merseyside outfit, feels that the striker should finally draw a underneath the incident and dismissed talk of a conspiracy.

"Suarez is not doing himself any favours with todays [sic] statement he should leave it now move on and concentrate on football," Hamann wrote on Twitter.

"I've not got a problem if he talks about his feelings and what he went through but he should leave Man United out.

"[Wayne] Rooney got banned for swearing into a camera so much for the conspiracy ...I think everybody needs to relax a little bit.

"That Suarez case was handled pathetically by LFC [Liverpool Football Club] hope BR [Brendan Rodgers] puts a lid on straight away as it cost the club a lot of points last season.

"Club should have stressed his honesty by admitting what he said ...If he denied it he probably got away with it.

"Lets put it to bed and hope Suarez is still a LFC player come the start of the season as he is a terrific player and we need him."

Good points made by Didi Hamann...

Waz, you seem determined to keep bringing up what was the worst aspect of last season for our club.
If it were my decision alone, I would lock (or even delete) this thread but as that would amount to draconian censorship, I cannot.
I would much rather the article above was posted in Didi Hamann's thread in the old boys section. At least then it wouldn't be sensationalising an episode best forgotton.

Get over myself? He is making fool of himself trying to make people feel sorry for him because he had a long day and was inconvenienced for a day? What I said is right Suarez should keep it zipped. At the end of the day it cost us big time the whole thing and that's the most important thing not Suarez having a long day. He should be more concerned about his £80k a week employers. I hope he can just play this season and no bullshit.

Suarez is right Man u get what they want with their politics but do think this should be left where it was.  He may of brought it up due to the JT case and how that ended up and with the FA now looking it just giving them a nudge
