I know it is only early days however I have been very impressed with Daniel Sturridge so far. He seems to be the predator in the box that we have long been waiting for. His goal against Mansfield was a typical centre forwards goal and his goal at Old Trafford last Sunday was all about being in the right place at the right time. The only frustrating thing is, he could of easily added to his tally in both games however once he has settled into the side and stopped trying too hard, those goals will come.
For far too long now, Luis Suarez has been isolated and supported by teenagers in Raheem Sterling and Fernandez Suso; who are both still learning the game and the ineffective Stewart Downing. The injury to Fabio Borini was unfortunate as we are still unsure what we are going to get from him. We have needed a predator to go alongside Suarez and contribute more goals to the team and release some pressure from the Uruguayan. Someone who can also fit into the style that Brendan Rodgers likes. Daniel Sturridge fits the bill perfectly. Skilful, quick, good movement, clever and young. I was excited by his arrival, and his first few outings in the red shirt have not made me think any different. His understanding with Suarez in the short period against Manchester United was optimistic and a positive to take from the defeat. Once the two of them have a run and click with each others game then I can see us scoring plenty of goals. However, the squad still needs improving in the summer in other areas and I would like another striker to be brought in because as stated, we still don’t know about Borini’s talents.
The feedback the Sturridge signing has generated from supporters has been positive and I am yet to see a negative comment. This is because; we have come out of Anfield after many frustrating afternoons in recent years with the saying; “If only we had a goal scorer in the right place to put the ball in the back of the net”. Now I think we have got one even if it is only early days yet. I think for the price we have got him for, it can turn out to be a bargain considering the extreme transfer fees that players leave for about these days.
Hopefully he will start the game with Suarez against Norwich City on Saturday and they can start to understand each other a bit more. If Suarez keeps up his fantastic form and Sturridge continues to impress, we can end the season on a high and have optimism going into the next campaign.
