Sterling called up to England squad

By Olivavu, Mon 10/09/12 at 15:04

Liverpool youngster Raheem Sterling has been called up to the senior England squad.

With Theo Walcott ruled out of Tuesday night’s Wembley clash against Ukraine due to illness, England manager Roy Hodgson has added three players to the squad - also calling up Tottenham’s Jake Livermore and Southampton’s Adam Lallana.

Sterling, Livermore and Lallana will now be given an opportunity to gain some valuable experience with the senior squad, according to Roy Hodgson.

"It was a good opportunity to invite some young players to come in and be part of the atmosphere," said the England manager.

"We still have enough good players to be able to deal with the game, but it’s always good when you have the chance to invite these players to come in and see how things are."

Hodgson said of Walcott: "Theo has picked up some sort of virus. He was quite violently ill last night.

"Daniel trained yesterday with stomach cramps but today woke up with the same stomach cramps, and the doctor advised us to keep him out of training and see how things are. The doctor is quite confident he will be okay, though.

"I can only hope nothing is going round the squad. That was why we were quite keen to get Theo home as soon as possible and also keep Daniel away from the squad.

"I have to hope it’s just an isolated case with the two players."

Yeh I agree it must have something with Jamaica's approach.  Because even Hodgson isn't that daft!

definitely because of jamaica interest. Insane for him though, to even be on the bench at 17.

He needs a competitive cap before he is unable to represent Jamaica.

Perhaps he will come on as a sub after 89 minutes..?

I would have thought that calling him up would do the trick for the moment!

don't want him thinking too much of himself though

Walcott was younger when he made his England debut.

Let's hope Sterling turns out to be better than him.

I think it's to secure him away from Jamaica. Expect him to come on in the last 10! After watching pre season he was the one player that I thought he is going to be amazing. I haven't said that too many times in recent years. I also think suso will be but that's off topic. Sterling tied down to England that's all probably won't get picked again this year.

Mark Walters believes Roy Hodgson has called Raheem Sterling into the England squad to stop Jamaica poaching the teenage star.

The Liverpool youngster was born on the Caribbean isle but moved to London at a young age, meaning he could represent either country.

Sterling, 17, has been in fine form for the Reds this season and earned an unexpected Three Lions call-up this week, following Theo Walcott’s withdrawal from the squad through illness.

And former England and Liverpool star Walters claims Roy Hodgson could bring on the former QPR trainee as a substitute against Ukraine to secure his long-term future.

“There’s no doubt he’s been one of Liverpool’s bright sparks,” he told the Sports Bar. “There could be an undercurrent with his call-up though.

“Jamaica are very hot on him at the moment and maybe that’s one of the reasons why he’s been called up a little bit early.

“Jamaica want him to play for them so maybe England just want to get him tied up so he’s ineligible for anyone else.”

As I thought too.

Hardly fair on the young lad though. He is hardly going to say no to the call, so his decision on his international future is being made for him. At 17 he shouldn't have to make such a choice.
I hope he doesn't get on tonight. I expect him to have a bright future with England but the choice should be his to make further down the line.

Agreed.

Calling him up now is not fair.

I might be in the minority here, but I think Sterling is the sort of player that will shine by being thrust into the spotlight.

I hope he gets a decent amount of time on the pitch
