Rodgers says we don't need a goalscorer

By Olivavu, Fri 24/08/12 at 18:01

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool can compete in the Premier League - even without a natural goalscorer.

The Reds have not had a striker who can consistently deliver in front of goal since they sold Fernando Torres to Chelsea in a record £50million deal in January 2011.

Andy Carroll is currently out of favour of Anfield under Rodgers' new system, meaning  his two main attacking options are Luis Suarez and Fabio Borini, neither of whom are considered to be purely goalscorers.

But he insists he is not concerned about a lack of firepower.

"It is no good having a goalscorer scoring 30 goals and no-one else scores - I've always been against that theory," said the Reds boss.

"You are going to need upwards of 70-odd goals to be up around the Champions League [places].

"For me it is a team ethic. Luis Suarez will score goals, Steven Gerrard can score goals, young Fabio Borini will score goals - but we also need goals from our centre-halves.

"If you can get your centre-halves scoring five goals that will always add and then you are looking at your full-backs doing a bit more.

"It is a team responsibility, not just one player. You bring in one striker who can score you goals, which is great, but it's not good for the team if the rest don't score.

"For us it is trying to have players in different areas of the field who can cause a problem.

"But equally important is that at the other end you are not conceding goals.

"I think we have shown, apart from last week (in the 3-0 defeat at West Brom) when the game was broken when we went down to ten men, that we have a good mindset and been strong this year."

Er....

He must be high if he thinks we can compete in the premier league without a natural goal scorer.

Although I see his point that is should be a team responsibility to score goals, we still need a natural goal scorer.

Agreed.

Suarez, Borini and Carroll aren't.

I don't see any of them three scoring 20 league goals. Suarez has the best chance, but not if he keeps up the erratic finishing.

I have to think it is all a smokescreen..... Andy Carroll will play a lot of games and score a lot of goals. If not well...... I reckon we will go backwards. Fabio Borini hit the woodwork against Hearts. The only real difference with last season was KD was not on the side of the pitch!

Andy Carroll is a out and out striker. We have him in our team and it's his primary goal to score goals. If BR is going to keep him, then he obviously sees some value in him. Who is a goalscorer if not a striker?

Andy Carroll won't score a lot of goals. He didn't in a system that suited him better than this one and he won't in this - hence why Rodgers doesn't want him.

There is no smokescreen as there is nothing to hide.

Were Rodgers holding belief in Carroll, he would be telling the press that he is the solution to our goalscoring problems.

But he hasn't because he isn't.

Then he should sell him if he doesn't believe in him. We don't need more than three strikers like we have now, all with different playstyles and attributes. I had the impression that he was making point that scoring goals is team responsibility.

Like I said I have to think otherwise..... I can't see him leaving as they said he would not go on loan and they will not recuperate what they (over) paid for him! So will he come good and surprise everyone?

Olivavu

Exactly.

We overpaid and won't take a massive loss or loan deal to let him join Newcastle and he wouldn't join West Ham, who did make an acceptable offer.

It is abundantly obvious that Carroll is not wanted by Rodgers. I don't understand how people aren't getting that.

At no point has Rodgers said that Carroll figures in his plans.

If we can't get rid of him, Rodgers doesn't want an unhappy player on his hands and is doing what he can to avoid that.

If he leaves, I reckon it will happen on deadline day.

Our new manager is obviously witless if he thinks football is a team game where all members of the team should be capable of scoring. He should be sacked in favour of Dave Bassett.

I am sure Skrtel and Enrique have ten goals between them each season.

And Johnson and Agger must have fifteen between them.

Why don't we just scrap attacking players and rely on Lucas and the defenders for goals..?

I get what hes saying but we still need a striker

Olivavu

Exactly that.
