Rodgers coy on transfer targets

By Olivavu, Fri 31/08/12 at 15:46

Brendan Rodgers is giving little away when it comes to Liverpool's transfer targets, but he has distanced the club from reports linking them with a late approach for Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

The Reds have seen more goings than comings towards the end of the summer window, with Charlie Adam sold to Stoke, Jay Spearing loaned to Bolton and Andy Carroll allowed to link up with West Ham on a season-long deal.

Things are, however, expected to heat up at Anfield as the deadline approaches, with Rodgers admitting that he is hopeful of bringing at least one more fresh face into his squad.

Numerous names have been linked with a move to Merseyside, with there expected to be high-profile additions to the Reds ranks with space having been freed up by departures.

Rodgers, though, continues to play his cards close to his chest when it comes to possible arrivals.

Reinforcements

He said: "There are a lot of people upstairs doing a lot of great work and are working very, very hard. Let's hope that by the time it shuts later on we have got some reinforcements."

Clint Dempsey is among the more likely arrivals before 11pm, with the Fulham forward believed to have turned down the chance to speak with Aston Villa as he favours a move to Liverpool.
Asked about the USA international, Rodgers said: "We have to wait and see. There is a number of players we are enquiring about."

"There have been lots of names thrown out there, but we are hopeful that by the end of the day we will have one or two in that can support the group."

As attention turned to Arsenal winger Theo Walcott, the Reds boss added with a smile: "He's an Arsenal player, a very good Arsenal player."

He was slightly more forthcoming when it came to speculation claiming Holland international Huntelaar could help to bolster Liverpool's striking options.

Rodgers said: "No. Definite no."

Contacts

By the time Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge was offered as potential target, Rodgers was keen to bring a conversation based on little more than rumour to a close.

He said: "Daniel is a young player that I know well. He has done very well for Chelsea.

"At the moment there are a number of contacts that we are making and I don't want to, out of respect to the other clubs and the players, sit here and go through every single player that has been linked with Liverpool. Hopefully there will be one or two coming in.

So it sounds like he is looking to get at least one of Dempsey, Sturridge and Walcott.

It'll just be Dempsey then.

Too much.

SSN reckon we got 6M for Cadam, so I'd say we have at least 10M to spare!

I heard Iain Dowie say "£5m to £6m", but he's a babbling idiot.

Did anyone else say anything?

Shame really as I think the lad has great potential, then again so has Carroll

Er....yeah, sure

Sky Sports News have said that we have shut up shop for the day and are expecting that we will not be making any signings.

FSG will not increase our bid for Dempsey.

And Adam and Henderson were both offered as make weights and neither wanted to go there.

Fan f**king tastic.

"It looks increasingly likely that there will be no ins at Anfield tonight." a club source is reported to have told the BBC.
