Reina injured on international duty

By EddieC, Wed 17/10/12 at 16:14

Liverpool face a goalkeeping headache with then news that Pepe Reina has been injured whilst on international duty with Spain. The Reds' first-choice stopper will undergo a physical examination upon returning to Merseyside.

Manchester City's David Silva was substituted in the game after picking up a hamstring injury, while Alvaro Arbeloa was also withdrawn with a similar knock.

Reina told reporters: "The injury is not serious. I got injured at half-time. Today [Wednesday] I will do more tests at Liverpool."

The goalkeeper has only missed four Premier League games for Liverpool since May 2007, with a run out of the team being enforced on him towards the end of last season due to suspension.

Worse and Worse

What happened to Doni anyway???

Never heard of him since last season but he still is on LFC books.

Yeah, I know. Just wondered if anyone knew where he is.

Last I heard the club offered to release him from his contract, but Doni refused to tear up his deal until he found another club. So I guess he's got his feet up on the Copacabana, drawing his 40-50K a week until his contract runs out. Nice work if you can get it.

Why do we want to release him instead of playing him as a backup for Reina.I think he is good enough for that.

That is something we are not likely to know for a good few years, when someone will spill the beans in an auto-biography or the like.

I think Doni came here thinking he could dislodge Reina. Or at least get more games than he did last season.

No doubt about that. You would hope that was why he came and he did seem half decent the couple of times he got on the pitch. That what makes it more surprising that he has just done one. if he wanted to further his career he would have looked for another club. All very strange.
Of course, i can remember thinking much the same about Brad Jones before hearing the sad news about his son. Maybe we should wait and see if Doni is not undergoing problems of a  similar nature before assuming the worse about him.

I haven't made any assumptions. Just wanted to know where he has vanished to.

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina will be given until at least Friday evening to prove his fitness for his side's Premier League clash with Reading on Saturday.

Reina has made uncharacteristic mistakes
• Blog: Cautious optimism over Anfield

Reina, 30, suffered a hamstring injury during Spain's 1-1 draw with France this week, but Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has played down the severity of the complaint.

"We'll wait another 24 hours to see how he is. It's nothing overly serious - he felt just a slight twinge in his hamstring at half-time in the game," Rodgers said.

"I met him here last night about 7.15pm. All of our players coming back from international duty come here [Melwood] to be assessed and reported before they go back home.

"We had the checks on him and he had a scan this morning. It's not overly serious, but we just need to weigh up the risk in the next 24-48 hours.

"Speaking to Pepe last night, he very rarely has any muscle injuries, but hopefully it will prove not to be serious."

Brad Jones will make his first Premier League appearance this season if Reina fails a late fitness test, with Rodgers placing faith in Liverpool's second choice 'keeper.

"It's good for us that if he [Reina] can't play, we've got Brad Jones who has made a fantastic improvement since the beginning of the season and shows up every day of his life very well here," Rodgers said.

"So if Pepe can't play, we've got an able understudy who can come in and do very well, I'm sure."

Aside from Reina and Fabio Borini [broken foot], the remainder of Liverpool's international players returned from duty unscathed and Rodgers is confident of having the club's big names at his disposal this weekend.

"They've all been fine. Luis [Suarez] and Sebastian Coates are not back yet because it is a lot of travel," Rodgers said. "They were playing in Bolivia and they will report back later this afternoon.

"Apart from that, I've spoken with Steven [Gerrard] and Glen [Johnson] this morning. They got back in the early hours of this morning and are recovering. Daniel Agger and Martin [Skrtel] are recovering as well.

"The mentality within the camp is very, very good and we're really looking forward to getting going again at the weekend."

Jones has been ok when used in the cups. But despite Reina's clangers, I would still prefer him.

Good man management by Rodgers there, bigging-up Brad Jones in case he has to come in. Nice to see that the rest have reported back with a clean bill of health. It still rankles that we have lost 2 to injury (one for 3 months) because of the latest shitey international break.
