The Spaniard, who guided the club to Champions League and FA Cup victories during his spell in charge also believes a move to bring him back to the club would have been welcomed by Liverpool su[supporters, who still hold him in high esteem.
"It was strange not to be approached," he told the Irish Independent.
"We know the club, the players, the Academy and we have even more experience now ... the fans were positive about the idea."
Benítez left Anfield in 2010 after a failure to qualify for the Champions League.
"We used to play so many important games that it seemed it was normal and it wasn't," said Benítez.
"People were talking about 'the past', but just a few years ago Liverpool FC was number one in Europe."

I am sure he was considered - before being disregarded.
NichoMon 10/09/12 at 12:51 Could have done without this rearing it's head again. We have a new manager. We can do without all the Rafa apologists having a go (again). However good you feel Rafa was, it's a new era.
ArtonSG8Mon 10/09/12 at 12:57 I love Rafa and I`d like him to be our manager,he was my first choice after Kenny left but now I've started to like Brendan and I want him to succed.
OlivavuMon 10/09/12 at 13:40 Rafa raised it by mentioning it to a newspaper. I wasn't screaming for him to return. Had he have done, then I would have been fine with that.
jarhead113Mon 10/09/12 at 15:24 In brendan we trust!
LFC SUBMon 10/09/12 at 18:41 Raga would have been my choice after klopp but rovers is in charge and I hope he does well.
OlivavuMon 10/09/12 at 19:01 I would have much preferred Rafa to Klopp.
ArtonSG8Mon 10/09/12 at 19:13 Rafa over klopp me too.We have brandan now and i hope we will have him for many years.

OlivavuMon 10/09/12 at 19:19 I would probably have preferred Rafa to Rodgers, but it was never going to happen. Rafa was the best manager we have had in the Premiership era while Rodgers has been a flop at Watford and Reading and done well with Swansea in one top flight season. I have been impressed with the way he has spoken, his signings and sales and the way he likes his side to play football. But his appointment remains a huge risk whichever way it is looked at. Hopefully he will be given time and patience to make his plans a reality.

I wasn't having a go at you Oli, just lamenting the fact that Rafa is casting a long shadow. I would have had him back as well but we've gone down a different and, dare I say it, a more exciting route. I really don't want to see some of the shite that was posted about the return of Rafa during the close season trotted out again.
