The move will end speculation over the 27-year-old's future having been linked with clubs such as Manchester City and Fiorentina over the summer.
Skrtel has become a vital member of the Reds side since arriving in a £6million deal from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008.
The Slovakia international was pictured on the Liverpool website signing the contract with managing director Ian Ayre at the club's Melwood training ground. Liverpool have given no details of the length of the deal.
Skrtel, who was voted the Anfield club's player of the season in 2011-12, said: "I'm happy because I am a part of one of the biggest clubs in the world. After last season there was a lot of talk about my future but I have to say that the first priority for me was always to sign a new deal with Liverpool.
"For me it's a great thing to play for Liverpool. I am proud to play for Liverpool with these great players - probably some of the best players in the world. I hope I can create history at this club and that the fans will always remember me - that's my target for the future."

Good news
NichoMon 20/08/12 at 20:27 Much as I thought when all the rubbish about him leaving surfaced in the first place. Good news. Agger next and it is all set fair.
OlivavuMon 20/08/12 at 20:30 I concur. Getting those two tied down is a great sign of their commitment and that of the club as well. Both are very good and we need to have them in the side going forward. There are few better pairings around.
ArtonSG8Tue 21/08/12 at 00:52 Congratulations to Skrtel and to us for keeping him too.
KK73Tue 21/08/12 at 05:31 Excellent news and now can't wait for Agger, though I am even more confident that a deal will be struck there!
frankyashaTue 21/08/12 at 09:31 now its time to success we have been deemed as failures for long we need to win the league

We do. I am probably one of the most over optomistic person you'll meet when it comes to LFC but even I can't make a case for them winning the title this season. I still fancy third though
OlivavuTue 21/08/12 at 13:10 We have needed to win the league for over 20 years now I would be very happy with third this season, but I just don't see it happening. I think we can challenge for fourth and hopefully Saturday is a reality check that fires the squad into life for the season.
