LFC scouting restructure

By WestAussie-Red, Fri 15/06/12 at 10:33

Liverpool FC are set to appoint Dave Fallows as head of scouting and recruitment as part of a double swoop on Manchester City.

Fallows will leave his role as first team scouting and recruitment co-ordinator with the Premier League champions to start work at Anfield.

The former Bolton Wanderers performance analyst will be joined by Barry Hunter, who will also quit City to be part of the new scouting set-up under manager Brendan Rodgers.

Since 2008 Hunter has been City’s chief scout for Italy, Switzerland and Russia.

The 43-year-old former Northern Ireland defender, who has also worked as a scout for Blackburn and Norwich, knows Rodgers well from their days at Reading together.

Securing the services of Fallows and Hunter from City represents a major coup for Rodgers as he looks to put the staff in place to help him realise his vision for the club.

Liverpool declined to comment but it’s understood that Fallows will form part of the new technical team working with Rodgers after owners Fenway Sports Group shelved plans to appoint a sporting director.

There are likely to be further appointments to the roles of head of development and head of medicine.

Fallows was at Bolton before moving on to City where he was key to building the club’s international scouting infrastructure using state-of-the-art technology.

“My role is primarily to co-ordinate all aspects of our scouting department, which includes liaising with scouts, fixture planning, managing the constant stream of reports coming in and effectively linking everything together,” Fallows explained back in 2010.

“The traditional role of a scout, where they went to a match and kept all the knowledge in their head rarely exists in modern day scouting structures.”

Playing devils advocate here. If City (Like Chelsea before them) buy , say, 30 players  the chances are at least 10% will be decent. So they sell 25 of them at a huge loss and buy another 30 and so on and so on. It has taken a few seasons for City to put together the current squad that won the title. Now I don't know what the turn over of players has been in that time but I think it is fair to say the Scouting team at City didn't unearth any unknown gems, but they did have the money to outbid everyone else when a half decent player came on the market.
I can see Michael's point to a degree. The scouting ethos at City is not what it would be as LFC as we do not have the bottomless pit of money to allow us to just buy everyone that comes along. We need to be finding the NEXT great players,  before they become superstars and command the sort of fees we can't afford. The guys we're bringing from City do not have that sort of track record, but that may be because they have never needed to.
The club put the same sort of faith in Comolli and that didn't work. I can't say I am excited with the scouting appointments because I don't know their career history that well but only time will tell if they can be successful at LFC. Let's hope so.

Being a scout at City or Chelsea is not a tough job - clearly.

They can just go out and sign player after player and take a hit if they don't turn out to be a success.

How many unknown bargain players have City signed over the last few years?
Of those, how many would you want at LFC?
Would you sign Savic for example?

Yes City just won the league but wasn't that down to spending tons of money on established stars like Yaya, Aguero, Silva etc?
Hardly need to be a good scout to sign that lot!

Do we have the money to do that? Obviously not so we need scouts that can find us the best players for reasonable prices! Not sure this guys track record stands up to that but I'll happily be proven wrong!

Well, from what I read...

We and City wanted Coates and Savic. We got Coates, so they got Savic.

Phew.

Yeah but Comoli was crap too

Comolli made some good signings for Spurs, but some dire ones too.

Most of what he got involved in with us looks like being overpriced mistakes.

£55m for Carroll and Downing is so depressing. Imagine how much better that could have been spent.
