Kenny: Goals Will Come

By EddieC, Tue 07/02/12 at 11:55

Kenny Dalglish is confident the goals will come after watching his side held to a goalless draw against Tottenham despite dominating the chance count.

Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez each had chances to win it in the second half but the Reds had to settle for a point which leaves them four adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.

The result at least puts Pepe Reina top of the clean sheet table with 10 shut-outs (level with Joe Hart from Manchester City).

Dalglish reflected: "It's important not to lose goals but it's equally important to score goals.

"We create enough chances and have not scored the number of goals we'd have liked. We'll just keep working away. I think it was Gary Player who said, 'The harder you work, the luckier you get.' We'll keep working hard to get lucky.

"The performance was excellent, and the result? It's disappointing to come away with only a point but you cannot criticise the players for their effort or the quality of the performance. If we'd just got a kind bounce of the ball around the goalmouth we might have walked away with the three points.

"Having said that, Pepe had a one-on-one with Gareth Bale as well. Everyone has made an important contribution tonight."

Dalglish opted to name the returning Suarez on the bench.

He added: "He hasn't played since December, so it would have been a bit unfair to throw him in. He's had half an hour - that will do him the world of good. That's better than anything we can do at Melwood with him.

"Every time Luis gets on the ball you think he's going to do something. We're delighted to get him back."

I hope Kenny's right, but personally I still think we need to sign an out and out goalscorer in the summer. This was supposed to be Carroll's role IMO, but I'm sure we're all agreed that if that is the case he hasn't done anywhere near a good enough job.

With Carroll's recent upturn in form (not to say he doesn't need to keep improving. Because he does), it doesn't surprise me that the staff might be hopeful that he hits a rather long purple patch and starts scoring on a more regular basis. Why spend money when it appears a poor striker is finally hitting form?

Of course, this is the frugal way of thinking about things. The cautious, yet somehow also risky way. The optimistic way. Showing faith in Carroll will either pay dividends and save us money, or will cost us a ton of points between now and May. Either way, there's nowt we can do now. We'll know the answer for certain come 2012-2013.

I still think that we would have benefited from bring in a poacher type striker in January, but if there was no value available then we shall have to wait for the Summer.

Carroll doesn't look like becoming a regular goalscorer for us unless we completely adapt our style of play to suit him, which doesn't really make much sense. Newcastle played around him and for him and that is why it was working out for him there, but we can't afford to switch our ethos to suit him.

I'm hopeful that he can adjust to our style, but I can't see it happening as I don't think he has the overall quality for that.

Carroll Has definatley improved but we didn't sign him to hold the ball up and give flick ons. At Newcastle he was prolific. I think if he hasn't adapted to suit  our style of play by the end of the season then we definatley do need to sign somebody. I hope it works out for him because I'd like to see us spend money on a quality wide player in the summer.

He was prolific at Newcastle because it was all geared to him there.

We need to play more balls into feet for Carroll. I feel we're falling into the same trap we did with Crouch a few years ago, playing everything into his head cos he's big when he's actually very handy with the ball on the deck.

Not sure Carroll has the same control and touch as crouchy but I agree we need to keep the ball on the deck n if we r to play high balls in to Carroll they need to b from wide areas rather then down the middle. Now with suarez bk in the team we won't b looking for the long ball as much hopefully.

I don't think Carroll has the technical ability or speed for that type of play.

I'm his biggest critic, but to be fair to the lad, he has shown great improvement over the last 3 games. i think the penny's dropped that he has to adapt to the LFC way, rather than vice-versa.

I agree, but I still don't think he has the ability to change his game enough and become a regular goalscorer for us.

I am hoping to be proved wrong, of course.

He has improved and the players are starting to realise not to lump it up to him at every chance they get, we fell into that trap to start with and thats why he has took so long to settle down along with being injured too. I did think we needed a goalscorer in the window but none were about but Keane was about as he is on loan to Villa we could of had him thats why the subject came up of the American league and getting a short term solution, but as stated no one was there of notice that would of improved us.

In the summer i see a goal scorer coming as Kenny does know we do need one as i think Kuyt may be gone in the summer, but we have seen in the January window inflated prices for players if we got Carroll this summer he would of cost about £20 million rather than the £35 million we paid for him and the same could be said for Torres if Chelsea waited till the summer £35 million rather than £50 they paid, at the time Newcastle had us by the short and curlies and we had Chelsea by the same.

I really hope the goals do come and i think they might Bellamy is on fire at the moment, Carroll is improving, Kuyt seems to have some confidence back, Suarez seems to get them and ofcourse there is Stevie G

Gerrard isn't really doing much shooting, aside from penalties against Joe Hart, while Dirk Kuyt clearly cannot be relied upon for goals at the moment.

Craig Bellamy is scoring, but can't keep playing every game due to his knees.

Luis Suarez is a regular enough goalscorer, but he's not a 25 a season man and clearly Andy Carroll isn't going to be for us either.

We need someone like Bent or Defoe to add that extra dimension and option.

Yeah and if Defoe or Bent were available for the right price then im sure Kenny would of made a move but he has obviously seen something in training that convinced him not to dip into the transfer window or the price was just too high and he is looking at one of them in the summer

If I remember correectly, Kenny made some very similar statements in Nov/Dec when we were hitting the wood work more often than the net. As for Carroll, every defender in the EPL knows his touch is lacking and he's not capable of taking players on. So, they press hard and force him to play backward or attempt a flick-on. Not sure if he has the skill or ability to do it (I'm doubtful he does), but he needs to start taking players on similar to what Torres used to do when he didn't suck.  Till then we will remain very one dimensional and continue to struggle for consistent goals regardless of work rate. This will be especially true if/when Suarez is not at his best.

In that case then other players around him need to be aware of a flick on or the knock back to the midfield
