Johnson: 'Woodwork cost us Champions League place'

By Olivavu, Wed 16/05/12 at 12:36

Glen Johnson believes Liverpool were just inches away from qualifying for the Champions League.

The Reds finished in eighth place in the Premier League table - 17 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham - but Johnson insists they would have been much closer if they had the rub of the green.

'I don't remember any team in the history of football hitting the woodwork as often as we have this season. But they are the fine lines people talk about.

'What width is a post? Probably three or four inches. If the ball goes two inches more in one direction it's probably hitting the woodwork and going in.

'With all of the shots that hit the woodwork we could have had 15 more points this season. That would have put us right up there towards the top four. But that's football and we can't change it now.'

Right-back Johnson also drew attention to Liverpool's failure from the penalty spot.

They missed seven of 11 and Johnson, who scored in the Carling Cup final shoot-out at Wembley, told this week's LFC Magazine: 'When we played Blackburn away a few weeks ago I was on the penalties. I'd be happy to take them.

'In the Chelsea game at Anfield I was joking with the lads and telling them that I was taking one if we got it.

'I don't know why we've missed so many this season. Normally, if someone misses a new person has a go and then they go on a run of scoring.

'But it seems that whenever we've got a new taker he's then missed. Then someone else has a go. Penalties are a part of the game where anything can happen.

'Even the best players in the world miss them. It's not easy to explain.'

He's deluded if he thinks this is true.

Hitting the frame of the goal is as good as blazing it miles over - they all count for the same: a shot off target and a miss.

Those GJ comments are all a bit silly.  2 inches more away from the goal and nobody is even having this conversation.  They might as well let him take the spot kicks, though.

I agree sort of with Johnson, a bit more luck in front of goal and we could of had a better season, not champions league but higher up the table definatly

Rubbish hitting the woodwork counts as a miss you might as well of missed the target all together

i dont know how people can say that. I heard collymore say it may as well have been blazed miles over!!? So a player hitting the woodwork and narrowly missing is the same as hitting the corner flag? What a load of bollocks. Its not the same at all. The outcome is the same but thats like saying a team thats playing well and losing 1-0 is the same as a team playing s**t and losing 10-0? No the signs are there tjat it can easily improve and thees a good chance they will do.

He's right. If we converted all those woodwork hits and the penalties we'd be much better off. Alternatively we could've bought Djibril Cisse in January and won the league.

Hitting the woodwork is as good as putting it five yards over.

It all counts the same.
