In his latest bizarre rant, former Liverpool striker El Hadji Diouf has claimed that he was better than Michael Owen.
That’s right, the Senegalese international attacker reckons that he was a better player than the 2001 Ballon D’or winner.
“In terms of football I was better than him at the time.” he told SFR Sport.
Owen scored 158 goals in 297 appearances for the club between his debut in 1997 through to his departure to Real Madrid in 2004.
The former England international will never be popular at Anfield after signing for Manchester United in 2009, but he will always be respected infinitely more than Diouf – who managed six goals in seventy-nine games for the club.
It at least makes a change for Diouf to be spouting nonsense about Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, but this claim is every bit as ridiculous as any other he has made.
Signing Diouf from Lens in 2002 rather than making Nicolas Anelka’s loan move from Paris Saint Germain a permanent one will be one of Gerard Houllier’s biggest regrets in his career. And life.
