Goalkeeper coach to leave club

Liverpool have made their third dismissal of the day, with goalkeeper coach John Achterberg joining Damien Comolli and Dr. Peter Brukner on the dismissed list.

In a busy day of developments, which began with director of football Comolli leaving, continued with Kenny Dalglish explaining it was his decision on who was signed last summer, continued with the reported dismissal of the head of sports science and medicine and saw chairman Tom Werner pledge the Club’s support to Dalglish and managing director Ian Ayre.

Dutchman Achteburg, who had an eleven year playing career with Merseyside neighbours Tranmere, was promoted to first-team goalkeeper coach last summer – almost by default following the departure of Xavi Valero when Rafa Benitez was sacked a year before, and after Roy Hodgson‘s right-hand-man Mike Kelly followed him out of the Club earlier in the year.

Achterberg was originally appointed as goalkeeper coach for the reserves and academy back in 2009.

I think that will probably be the extent of it for now, everyone seems to have been let go at the same time, the announcements were just slightly staggered.

The timing of it is strange surely things like this are usually done close season?

I think the timing is intended to give everyone a kick up the arse before today's game. Not a tactic I agree with personally, but hopefully it works.

Why do we need a third rate keeper coaching a world class keeper. I may have missed something though/

I don't think Reina has saved a penalty since Xavi Valero left.

We should bring him back!
