Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is in advanced talks with the club over a return.
Gerrard, who confirmed his exit from MLS team LA Galaxy this week, will only consider a comeback if he is convinced he can offer something.
The thirty-six year old does not want to be given a role based on his reputation alone and is keen to make a contribution to the club.
It is likely that he will join Alex Inglethorpe’s youth coaching setup and will work alongside the former Spurs coach as well as his former mentor Steve Heighway.
Gerrard wants to keep learning while he works towards his UEFA A licence and sees Heighway as an ideal tutor while he continues his study.
A playing return at the club is highly unlikely given that Gerrard called time on his career on the pitch back in the Summer of 2015.
The ex-England skipper could decide to continue his playing career elsewhere, with Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic keen to sign him, before coming back to Anfield in a coaching capacity next year.
Whatever role he takes on, supporters all over the world will be delighted to see Gerrard come home.
