Gerrard: 'Top four is realistic'

By Olivavu, Fri 05/10/12 at 09:58

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes a top-four finish in the Premier League and a trophy remains a realistic aim.

The Reds are currently 14th in the Premier League, and are also struggling in the Europa League.

Asked what Liverpool's realistic target was, Gerrard told Football Focus: "Top four and a trophy."

Questioned whether that was still realistic, he said: "Yes. We're six games in. The Norwich win will be the catalyst to push us on."

Liverpool beat Norwich 5-2 on Saturday, but suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Udinese on Thursday in the Europa League.

Gerrard said: "I think teams will find it really difficult to play against us and I'm confident we can go on a run of winning games.

Liverpool have won only one league match out of six since the arrival of Rodgers and are only three points above bottom-of-the-table QPR.

After the Udinese loss Rodgers called his players lazy.

But midfielder Gerrard seemed a lot more upbeat: "I'm confident we can go on a run of winning games.

"They are good opportunities but they are also tough games. They are games we should be winning, certainly here at home.

"We've being playing well for a number of weeks, so if we can continue that I am sure we can take maximum points in both those games."

I think he is saying it oil because he feels he has too.  I agree unless we stop the defensive howlers out we won't get in the top four but if we can we might have a chance:)

It isn't unrealistic, but it will take a lot more consistency!

I still believe we can get top four. Admittedly we have had a disastrous start but I thought it would be at least Christmas before the Rogers ethic took hold. it seems to have already kicked in and the whole squad (with one or two exceptions) seem to have embraced the style. I think we will continue to improve over the coming months.
Oli mentioned the magic word before - Consistency. If we continue to play (and develop further) the quick pass and move  football that we have shown recently and cut out the defensive errors I reckon we'll be attacking the top for by Christmas.

. Will if oil says it isn't unrealistic, it most be probable:)

It just isn't going to happen unless we start winning games. Obvious, but true.

We just don't score enough at home and therefore don't win enough games.

Spurs and Arsenal are clicking and Chelsea are way ahead of us.

I think we are going to have a fight just to get top six.

Not realistic with O-O Home Draws with teams like Stoke.

We have got so much improving to do to even have a sniff of top four.

Rodgers did tell the fans to have patience.

Although he says we can get top four as well.

Let's learn to walk before we think about sprinting.

I think we can finish in the top 4...in a few years.  We need to develop our young talent for the future, acquire veteran talent for the present, and spend the money to keep both.  I agree with BR that we need to be patient, and I'm more than willing to keep with him for a couple of years.  But we need to start show signs of improvement by the end of the season and FSG needs to put up the money to allow us to get the talent we need.  If we aren't AT LEAST in the top 8 by the end of the season, then either FSG or BR need to go...personally, I think it should be FSG - again, only if we haven't improved by the end of the season.

I don't think either should go. Rodgers is working on a long term plan and FSG own the club.

They own the club but they should work for the best of the club and support the manager with money in the transfer window.

I think it is a pretty wild statement to say the owners should go if we don't get top eight.. Owners don't resign anyway but Whatevere the team achieve on thec field this season i think the the overall improvement in all aspects of the club off the field since FSG took over is enough to earn our support.
I still think it is too early to write off our chances of a top four finish this season.  This time last season all the arse fans were calling for Wenger's head when they were well down the table at the same stage of last season (Lower than we are now, I think) . Of course we need to improve but i think we have improved as the season has gone on.
It would be very easy to say f**k it, I'll write off this season but I have no intention of doing that until at least May. Instead of talking about what we won't do, let's at least lokk for some positives (and there are many)

As for Everton qualifying for the Champions league, there is more chance of QPR winning thetitle.

Arton has spoken enough garbage about the owners in the past. He seems to think they should either buy us success or go.

Not buy success but invest in the club.

On this occasion it wasn't Arton
