Maxi leaves Liverpool

By Badmoon, Fri 13/07/12 at 18:08

Liverpool have today confirmed that Maxi Rodriguez has joined Newell's Old Boys in Argentina.

The midfielder appeared to be on the verge of a move back to his native Argentina last summer, but Kenny Dalglish convinced the player to stick it out at Anfield.

Maxi - signed from Atletico Madrid in January 2010 - scored 17 times in 73 appearances for the Reds. Highlights of the his Anfield career include two hat-tricks in the space of a few weeks against Birmingham and Fulham in 2011, as well as important strikes against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in November of that year.

Coincidentally, 3 out of the 4 times I saw Maxi in Tesco's it was in the the wines and spirits Aisle. Given that 75% of any shopping trip to Tesco (or anywhere else that is licensed to sell alcohol) is spent trawling through the wine special offers I shouldn't be surprised at the coincidence.

(Did you see what I did there. I used statistical data to back up my statement - do I get an Oli commendation star?)

Statistics say that you should, but no...

While I agree that they were both decent people, Maxi was not a patch on Dirk as a player and he will not be remembered as affectionately as Dirk. Maxi was only ever a squad player and will only be remembered as that. I wish him well for the twilight of his career.

Yeah, Kuyt will go down as a fan's favourite and something of a legend for many.

Maxi was well liked and scored some good goals, but his contribution was nothing like Dirk's.

Best of luck to the pair of them though
