Carragher - Gerrard is Liverpool's greatest ever

By EddieC, Mon 21/01/13 at 13:18

Jamie Carragher has hailed Steven Gerrard as Liverpool's 'greatest player ever', saying that his colleague & current club captain exceeds the standards set by those that preceded him.

Gerrard was being honoured by the Football Writers' Association at a gala tribute dinner. Tributes were paid by former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier - who first gave Gerrard his chance in the first team - and team-mate Carragher. Former Reds boss Kenny Dalglish was unable to attend but passed on his congratulations.

Carragher was full of praise for Gerrard, and said: "I think we are in the presence of the greatest player ever to play for Liverpool. People will say I am biased because we are good friends and because of the trophies we have won together, but it is a fair accolade to give him."

He went on: "There are guys like Kenny [Dalglish], Graeme Souness, Ian Rush, all world-class players, but the difference was they were in a world-class team - and Stevie has not played in a world-class team.

"Stevie's one strength is he has no weakness, he can run, tackle pass and score goals. Football is a team game, but special players do special things at special times, and that is Steven Gerrard."

Gerrard, 32, was voted FWA Footballer of the Year in 2009 and was delighted to have won the award again.

"Tonight's award means a lot because these guys have followed me throughout my career, written about me whenever I have played," he said. "To receive this award from the Football Writers' Association is a very proud night for myself and my family. I feel very flattered and humbled to receive it.

"I have always looked at personal awards a bit of a bonus really. I always try to achieve things with Liverpool or fight to do well for England.

"But when you talk about awards of people like the supporters or people in the press who watch you week in and week out, scrutinise your performances, these mean an awful lot because these guys know their football."

He's certainly the best player we've had of the Premiership era.

Sorry Jamie. He is one of the best but not the best

If I was picking an all time team, he would certainly be in there.

It is between him and Kenny overall though for me. Kenny won more but was in a better side.

Gerrard has been with us his whole career though and has often carried the team.

I only caught the tail end of Kenny as a player and so cannot compare them from experience.

We have been fortunate to have such quality though.

gerrard has to be the best all round player. souness tackler formidable apponent, dalglish clever orchestrator, rush world class goal scorer. gerrard has a bit of all of them which you couldnt say about the others. thats what makes him the best.
