Alonso left Liverpool back in 2009

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has announced that he will hang his boots up at the end of the season.

The Bayern Munich man, who is now thirty-five years old, will be out of contract at the end of the current campaign and has decided that it is the right time to bow out.

He announced the decision, which had been leaked by the press earlier this year, via his personal Twitter account.

“Lived it. Loved it. Farewell beautiful game.” he tweeted.

The Spanish international, who won the World Cup and European Championship with his country, was also interviewed by the German club’s tv station.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to make, but I believe it’s the right time.” he told FC Bayern.tv

“I always thought it would be better to quit sooner rather than later.

“I still feel good, but I believe this is the right moment.

“I’ve experienced so much as a player with Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

“They are all great clubs. And of course, with the Spanish national team.

“I never would’ve thought I’d have such a great career, and I hope there’s more to come before it ends.” he finished.

Alonso was part of the team that memorably won the Champions League in 2005 – scoring the third goal that tied the scores at 3-3 with AC Milan.
