I really think our youngsters are good enough in those areas and buying more back up players will only further stagnate their progress

OK thats fine thats your opinion , but i remember him at AV putting in brilliant crosses and scoring some great goals , including 1 against us when we lost to them , so he does have the ability i just feel he has been under pressure and is not coping with it and thus his confidence is shattered after hitting the post several times . Again i make the point that for 2-3 seasons Lucas was the aim of most fans to get rid off yet ask anyone now and would we get rid of him ????

All the signings from this season need to be given 2 seasons minimum . Adam and Suarez are the only ones to really improve and Carroll is slowly showing it just needs good service.

Lucas was a teenager when we signed him. He also didn't have a set position and role.

Stewart Downing has never played in another league and is meant to be at his peak - and also cost us £20m, which is a pricetag that should not come with a timescale for him to settle in that is anything over a few months.

He has never been a particularly good or consistent player and that has continued for us.

He has made a career out of being a left-footed Premiership winger and somehow has duped Kenny into parting with £20m for his 'services'.

He will NEVER be good enough for this club. No two ways about it.

I think Kenny is a better judge than you or I when it comes to knowing when to bring Sterling and co into the first team.

I would like to see Sterling and Silva on the bench towards the end of the season though.

Although I'm sickened by Downing's current form, and the fact that Raul Merieles has more assists than Downing in just over 30 mins of game-time for us this season. I think he started quite brightly, remember amazing run and thunderous shot against the cross-bar in the opening game against Sunderland.

I think he's just got no confidence and everyone is getting on his back. The fact is we paid £20m and we'll get nowhere near that back if we sold. I'd rather give him another season and see how he gets on, in that time, Sterling could have made the move up and we may have opened the coffers and brought in a pacy winger a la Hoilett / Hazard / insert any young winger anywhere in the world which we'll be linked with. I just think Carroll has had a good run and his confidence is up and is looking much better. I'm just hoping (against hope some might argue) that if he gets some confidence he could be really valuable. It just seems he's forgotten how to run at people.

Why do we need to change the defence exactly? It is the best department in our team.

Flanagan showed his lack of concentration by watching Larsson score for Sunderland at Anfield, Kelly played Aguero in on goal in the Carling Cup and Robinson is nowhere near Enrique.

So none of those three is the finished article and ready to become a regular. Yet.

Harsh on Kelly, who has performed better than Johnson when picked. Not up to me to put words into other peoples posts but i think the point JH was making was a fair one. We have reasonably cover right across the back line but are lacking in wide areas and up front. Should we be spending money strengthening an already solid defense or look to be getting some creativity into the midfield and attacking areas. It our lack of scoring goals, not conceding them, that has been our major problem this season.(And last come to think of it)

I am not being purposely harsh on Kelly, I am just pointing out that he can't be expected to come into the side and become a top class right-back immediately. People moan about Johnson's defending, but if he were that bad we wouldn't have the second best defensive record in the Premiership as he'd be exploited a lot more often than he is.

Fair enough, he stank on Saturday in losing Rooney for both goals, but let's not forget that Rooney is a top class striker that has made a lot better defenders look ordinary. Martin Kelly wouldn't necessarily have done any better.

Also, Johnson offers a lot going forward and could have opened the scoring for us on Saturday had his finish been slightly more accurate. So he's not in serious danger of losing his position in the first team at present.

And, you are right, our defence is the last area of the pitch that needs to be worked on. Steve Clarke has clearly done a good in job in preparing the back four and has structured our best defence for the last few seasons in Reina, Johnson, Enrique, Agger and Skrtel. Robinson, Kelly and Flanagan all have potential and are all currently sound cover options for the first choice players - but they are not ready to come in and become regulars for us right now. It shows that we have good depth in defence before even mentioning the experience of Carragher and Aurelio and promise of Coates and Wilson.

We have been lacking quality wide men for some time now and that is still the biggest issue in the side. Downing, Kuyt, Maxi and Cole are not the answer and not one of them deserves a place in our first team right now. It just further shows how unfortunate it is that Craig Bellamy has dodgy knees, because he has not just been our best option on the flank this season, he's been our best attacker - or even player - this season.

Aside from quality cover for Lucas, our midfield is reasonable. It seriously lacks goals though as Gerrard is not scoring like he used to, while Henderson and Adam are glaringly short on strikes for us this season. I think Adam is a reasonable player and won't get a great deal better, but Henderson hasn't impressed me much at all this season. He has shown signs that he has the potential to become a top performer for us, unlike Downing, but it's all in flashes rather than consistency. He isn't worthy of his place at present, but there is so little competition and pressure that he can get away with it - like so many others.

I am really not surprised to see Stewart Downing leading this poll. I did expect that Fabio Aurelio would have more votes though, given how pointless his presence seems nowadays.

Aurelio is a good enough player, yes, but he just isn't fit enough and should never have been re-signed in the first place.

Aurellio is a fuckin magnificent, top drawer player, who unfortunately has a fragile body. i think his story is one of the most unfortunate in recent liverpool history.
