A Liverpool FC fan has been found guilty of racially abusing rival Manchester United supporters and their club captain Patrice Evra.
Phillip Gannon, 58, was seen on live television doing a racially offensive monkey impression, Liverpool Magistrates' Court was told.
The incident happened amid a volatile atmosphere at Anfield on January 28 this year when the two sides met in an FA Cup fourth round clash, Rob Girvan, prosecuting, said.
It was the first game between the Premier League rivals since an eight-match ban was imposed on Liverpool striker Luis Suarez after the FA found him guilty of racially abusing Mr Evra.
In the 23rd minute of the game the TV camera panned over fans in the lower Centenary Stand, where Gannon was sitting with two friends, and he was seen to position his hands under his armpits.
The coverage, broadcast worldwide by ITV, quickly spread across social networking site Twitter and complaints were made to police, the court heard.
One trial witness also told the court he heard Gannon say towards Evra: "Tu es petit noir homme merde" ("You little black s**t man").
Gannon, a carpenter and joiner, repeatedly shouted "pikey", "pikey twats", "pikey bastards" and "pikey c****" at opposing fans throughout the game, the bench was told.
He also shouted: "F*** off you spastic mutants" in the direction of disabled supporters watching the game nearby, a witness said.
Gannon, 58, of Heol Meirion, Barmouth, north Wales, was found guilty of two counts of using abusive or insulting words within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused alarm or distress.
The court heard the offences were racially aggravated, despite Gannon's claims that the "monkey" gesture was a reference to "cavemen" and that he never abused Evra in French.
But the chairman of the bench, who declined to give his name, said they deemed it to be a monkey gesture, adding that it was "clearly racist" and the bench also believed that Gannon shouted a racist insult at Evra in French when he came towards the touchline.
"There is no doubt that this was a racist remark," he said.
Gannon sat about eight rows back from the pitch at the Anfield Road end of the Centenary Stand, the court heard.
The Manchester United fans were in the Anfield Road stand about 20 to 30 yards away.
Gannon also said that at the time he was unaware that "Pikey" was a racial slur against the travelling community.

I hope he gets a lifetime ban from Anfield.

The stupid c**t.

I use the P word quite a lot. I also give away supporters and visiting players plenty of grief. I'm also 58. Maybe just as well I don't go too often any more.
This guy has probably been doing the same thing at games for 40 odd years. His stupidity is that he didn't appreciate the heightened feelings because of the Evra / Suarez situation.
If I got arrested every time I shouted something nasty at an opposing fan or player, I would have been locked up , with the key thrown away, years ago along with a few hundred thousand other football fans.
Let's get this into context before we start coming the holier than thou. In this instance I'm more a "there go I, but for the grace of God" type of guy.
Anyone who has been to a live game where they passionately support one team or the other and do not get caught up in the moment are far superior beings to me.

My honest opinion is that the players are fair game & with the amount they get paid they can be expected to take a bit of abuse on the chin & laugh it off, but I think abusing opposing fans for anything other than the team they support is unacceptable. The comments he made to the disabled fans in particular were disgusting.

Ed is right.

I like a bit of banter and usually sit near the away fans in either the Main Stand or Annie Road end. But I will not abuse people based on race or disability.

Football is just a game, at the end of the day.

He has been given a four year ban.

I'll bet a quid to a pinch of s**t that this bloke has been annoying the f**k out of the people around him in the ground for years and this was the opportunity to get rid. The evidence must have come from Liverpool fans around him as "The Manchester United fans were in the Anfield Road stand about 20 to 30 yards away."
I agree about the abuse of disabled fans but this statement "He also shouted: "F*** off you spastic mutants" in the direction of disabled supporters watching the game nearby, a witness said." seems a bit odd when the disabled areas are at the other end of the main stand and at the front of the Kop, as far as I remember.
A man with the education to abuse Evra in fluent French and then come out with an inane comment about disabled people must be a one off in Anfield.
I've no doubt the guy is a tit but let's not crucify him for being obtuse. In this case i don't think the punishment fits the crime, (but then I'm old school. In the 60's to 80's anything was fair game. If someone in the crowd upset people around him, he'd get a slap and that would be the end of it.)

I'd have seen him banned for life.

It is just a game after all and he has gone way over the line.

No more than 80% of fans at a game when the scum visit Anfield. Have you stood (no one sits) on the Kop for one of these games?

The hatred is frightening mate. I don't like it but it is a fact, especially now that the team don't do the talking on the field as they once did. It's as bad at Old toilet, but it is pure hatred.
In the cup game a few years ago when Crouchy scored the only goal, the cheers when Alan smith  suffered an almost career finishing injury were unmerciful. The John Arne Riise song was modified especially for the occasion.
The point I'm making is this poor shcmuk is no different to many, many fans who go to matches all over the country (and the world for that matter). He just got caught on camera at a time when feelings were running high.
I'll have a small wager that John Terry doesn't get banned for 4 years when he goes to court later this summer (doubt he'll be found not guilty, damning as the evidence is)

I agree, to a point. But it doesn't make it right.

This guy got caught on camera doing a monkey impression.

He gets in trouble. Ipso facto and no complaints.

The BNP march in various cities making Nazi salutes, carrying racist banners but they don't get arrested and banned from attending rallies. There are Islamic extremists who we can't even deported. This guy is just a gobshite football fan. Whatever way you look at it this punishment is way out of proportion.

It isn't.

Those people should be punished and are the ones out of proportion.
