See I think the whole prem-proven thing can be a bit of a smokescreen, wasn't Downing prem-proven and Mata seen as a possible risk. How Hindsight has changed that. Defoe? No Thanks, didn't he score like 4 goals all of last season.

Although I feel like we are a squad in transition, I think it's important to remember where we were last season, a whole lot has changed, and I think the squad is still settling in and learning to play with each other. However, I do feel some of the signing haven't really lived up to their billings (that happens sometimes) so would be nice to rectify that.

A - Mata rejected us.

B - Downing is proven to be mediocre.

C - Defoe has an excellent scoring record this season and would be ideal for us right now.

A. How do you know he did?

B.Give him time.

C.Im sure you would have complained like billio if we had signed Defoe.

Guillem Balague said so, and I trust his word on such matters.

We were also rejected by Ashley Young before he joined United. I would much rather have had either of these two, but without Champions League, or any European football on offer, they both turned us down.

And how much time does Stewart Downing need exactly? He has provided one assist and one goal (these coming against Brighton and Oldham) so far for us and is meant to be at the peak of his playing career. For a player of his age and experience that cost £20m, it is nowhere near good enough.

And I would certainly not have complained had we signed Jermain Defoe. He is scoring at a very good rate this season, especially when you consider that he is not being given regular games at Spurs. He is a much better striker than Andy Carroll and would suit our style of play much better too.

Just out of interest can you pull up the interview where Balague said that? Becuase i was under the impression we never made a move for Mata in the summer, that two clubs did, being Chelsea and Arsenal. And Arsenal dragged their feet and wouldnt give him the wages he was after.

It was on Sky Sports tv and he said that we contacted his father expressing an interest but were knocked back because we didn't have Champions League football on offer.

When it comes to Spanish footballers and English clubs, I'd usually take Balague's word for it.

And I am sure you would too under normal circumstances, but given that you are doing your best to discredit anything I post I see you have made an exception on this occasion.

Not at all, nothing concrete was all i said, hearsay.. Nothing beyond that, like i said i also read stuff at the time from Mata agents mentioning Arsenal along with Chelsea after he had signed but nothing about us.

Thats all.

That's because we contacted his agent in May 2011 and were told pretty quickly that we weren't contenders for his signature.

So we switched to Ashley Young and then got turned down by him as well.

And finally we ended up with Stewart Downing.

Didnt realise you worked for the club and had insider knowledge.

Dont spout off rumours as fact Oli lad.

I don't think anyone should be under the delusion that Stewart Downing was ever our first choice.

I think Downing had a great season before we signed him, Villa with Young / Bent / Downing combo looked good going forward. Shame he hasn't replicated that form.

No one will know if he was our first choice, I know we were in for Ashley Young, but who's to say we weren't after them both?

Mata I heard we were sniffing about, but nothing formal, plus he's not really an out-and-out winger, more of an inside forward / central 'in-the-hole' type player.

Such a shame we couldn't manage to land Ashley Young, how Villa valued both him & Downing in the same price range I don't know? If we paid £20m for Downing then Young should have been at least £30m.

Ashley Young's contract was going to expire this Summer, so Villa couldn't ask for so much, hence him going for less than Downing. And having already sold one winger, Villa didn't want to lose another so they put the asking price for Downing up to £20m - which most would consider a ridiculous price for him, but we clearly did not.

Mata may not be an out and out winger, but he's a damn site better than Downing will ever be.

Young has done well at United, injuries aside, and has scored some very good goals. I was really hoping we would be able to bring him in when we were first being linked with him, but then United's name came out in the media and they were in pole position from then on.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was another good winger that we missed out on. It's a shame we didn't get him in.
