Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum says that Divock Origi had worked hard for his derby winner.

The Belgian came off the bench late on during the game with the score locked at 0-0 after each side had spurned good chances to open the scoring in a tense encounter.

And he managed to bag the winner in the ninety-sixth minute after England international Jordan Pickford made a mess of dealing with Virgil Van Dijk’s sliced shot – and Wijnaldum reckons he deserved it.

“Everyone in the dressing room is delighted for Divock that he had that moment.” he said.

“He hasn’t been playing but he has never moaned or complained.

“He has kept training hard and has kept doing his best in every session.

“He deserved that chance to play and the fact he scored and gave us the three points makes it even more beautiful.” he added.

The Holland international went on to point to the depth manager Jurgen Klopp has at his disposal this season – and used Origi as an example of how many important players the German can call on.

“Every player in this squad is important.” he continued.

“If a defender goes out we have another top defender who can step in. It’s the same in midfield and attack.

“When Divock came on he showed his pace straightaway with that run down the line.

“He was a threat to the Everton defenders and did so well.” he finished.
