Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has revealed the part he played in Manchester City missing a penalty on Sunday.

Algerian international Riyad Mahrez blazed the late spot kick over the bar at Anfield as he spurned the chance to seal the points for the Premier League champions.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker dived in the correct direction – and it appears that the Brazil international was receiving instructions from his coach on the touchline as the Dutchman revealed what he was up to.

“We have our talks before every game.” he told Premier League Today.

“If anything changes on the pitch then we have a little bit of contact with each other because the penalty taker changed because the main one Aguero wasn’t on the pitch.

“We had to look at who was going to take it and get the information through about what we thought was going to happen.

“That’s what we tried to do.” he added.

And the former Tranmere Rovers man was not keen on revealing how he goes about analysing opposition penalty takers before each game – though it does go to show how Simon Mignolet has such a good record of saving penalties for the club.

“That would be the secret of how we work.” he said.

“We have an analysing department, we were talking to Alisson and Simon and the other goalies what they think, and we decide.” he finished.

Watch for yourself and you’ll see what the coach was doing…
