Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has said “belief” was key to beating Paris Saint Germain.
The French champions were defeated 3-2 after coming back from two goals behind in a high-scoring Champions League group stage match to get the competition under way.
And Holland international Van Dijk, who is the most expensive defender in the history of the game, said that the Reds determination and refusal to give up was crucial to snatching the points.
“We have belief – you have to have belief.” he told Liverpoolfc.com
“We want to do at least as well as we did last season.
“That’s a very hard thing to do, but you have to believe.
“We didn’t just have a plan to control Neymar – we had a plan to control the whole team.
“They have many great players and we did very well. Everyone’s excited.
“We’ve made a good start but we haven’t won anything yet. We need to show it every week – every three days – and keep going.
“But we’re obviously very pleased.” he finished.
Next up for the £75m centre-back is the visit of former club Southampton, who come to Anfield on Saturday afternoon for the next round of Premier League fixtures.
