Southampton have emerged as the favourites to sign Liverpool striker Danny Ings.
The former Burnley forward has been of interest to several Premier League and Championship clubs this Summer after deciding that he needs to leave Anfield in order to play more regularly.
He has spent three injury plagued seasons on Merseyside and has asked manager Jurgen Klopp to let him move on ahead of the new season so that he can start more games for another club.
The German was keen to keep hold of the twenty-six year old as he looks to have plenty of depth in his Liverpool squad for an assault on four competitions in the 2018/19 season.
But the former Borussia Dortmund boss has accepted that Ings needs to leave Liverpool and has reluctantly allowed him to seek pastures new in order to progress his stalling career.
Crystal Palace were believed to be closing in on a deal to sign him recently, but it now looks as if former Wales manager Mark Hughes has stolen a march on Roy Hodgson in the chase to sign him.
Newcastle United’s former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is reported to have made a loan offer for Ings, but Liverpool are said to be seeking a permanent move with a fee of around £20m.
The transfer window closes at 5pm on Thursday and Ings will need to have completed an exit by then or his options will be reduced to joining an overseas club instead.
