Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is ready to let Danny Ward have a go at proving he can be number one at the club.
That’s according to Echo writer Ian Doyle, who writes that the German has been “hugely impressed” with the Wales international during preseason so far and is ready to give him “increased game time” in upcoming friendlies.
Klopp will take his squad to face Bury on Saturday afternoon before facing Blackburn Rovers in a week before heading jetting off to the US to take on Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Manchester United in more illustrious friendly action.
And twenty-five year old Ward could be given the opportunity to make a claim for the number one spot going into the new season as Loris Karius continues to struggle.
The German followed up his disastrous performance in the Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid back in May with a less than convincing showing against League Two side Tranmere Rovers this week.
He spilled a routine shot into the path of Jonny Smith, allowing the Rovers man to score in the 3-2 friendly win – which saw plenty of Liverpool fans call for a new number one to be signed.
But should Ward seize the opportunity during the upcoming games, he could save Klopp plenty of transfer funds by securing the number one spot for the new campaign.
Fans are divided over whether the answer to the goalkeeping problem lies with Ward or whether a deal to bring in a new face should be done.
All for Ward to be given a chance, deserves it but if it doesn’t work do we go back to Karius in January again? Why don’t we do a VVD and Robbo and fix positions of weakness instead of bandaid solutions? (Line we have over the years).

Karius’ confidence is visibly shot at the moment. Needs to be taken out of the firing line. Ward deserves his chance, but you can’t help scratch your head wondering why Klopp doesn’t just bite the bullet and buy a ‘keeper.

Karius – not good enough
Migs – not good enough
Ward – not good enough
All good but just not good enough.
It’s not hard to understand this.

If Ward is going to be number 1 then play him most pre season not half each for the keepers leave Karius take a break and bring Grabara in as cover

No way will Ward be NO1 next season for @LFC maybe NO2 with both Karius and Mings leaving

A less emotional take on Karius. What happened in Kiev should mean no repeat errors due to concentration issues. What happened at Tranmere shows nothing has been learnt. It is time to buy or give Ward a run.

"Danny Ward should start ahead of Karius".
People who never seen Ward play in a competitive game of football

Danny Ward is an upgrade on Karius but I don’t even trust Klopp to make that call for some reason.
If Karius doesn’t make a trademark distribution fuck up or flap in pre season it WILL happen within the first 5 games of the EPL. Guaranteed
