City regret not signing Van Dijk

Former Celtic manager Ronny Deila has said that Manchester City regret not signing Virgil Van Dijk.

The Premier League winners were interested in signing the Holland international when he opted to move to Liverpool instead and Delia has said that they should have got him when he left the Scottish champions.

“Virgil was special but when I came in I don’t think he was fit.” he told the Daily Record.

“He had things to work on and in training he was lazy.

“I told him those things and that he had to work on getting 100% in every session and to take care of his body.

“When he said he was going I told him not to go to Southampton or Sunderland but straight to Manchester City or United.

“I said to him he was that good.

“I told City and they regret it now.” he finished.

Van Dijk has been a big factor in Liverpool’s defensive improvement and the world record fee paid to Southampton to bring him to Anfield is being mentioned less often as he continues to justify the £75m spent on his services.
