Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is set to miss out on a starting spot at the World Cup.

The Brazil international appears to be in the position of having to prepare himself for a place on the substitute’s bench for Brazil after manager Tite revealed his preference for Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus.

“It is true that Firmino did better than Gabriel Jesus, who was injured in the season.” he is quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“But Gabriel in the Seleção plays very well.

“So yes, today he is our number nine.” he added.

Jesus could even be handed the captain’s armband in an upcoming friendly match ahead of the tournament in Russia, which would further cement his place ahead of Firmino.

“All of the starters, including Willian, Thiago Silva, Felipe Luis, Fernandinho, who are players who have constantly entered the team, they have already been captains.” he said.

“The only one who has not yet been captain is Gabriel Jesus.” he finished.

Liverpool supporters will be bemused that Firmino is being left out of the starting XI for his nation after the season he has had at Anfield.
