Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has handed the captain’s armband to Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.
The world’s most expensive defender will now skipper his country as they aim to return to prominence in international football after missing out on Euro 2016 and this Summer’s World Cup in Russia.
And the former Southampton centre-back, who cost the club a world record £75m fee back in January, is pleased to have been given the chance to lead his nation.
“Great news, for me and my family.” he said.
“I am very happy with it, it is a great honour to be the captain of your country.” he added.
Former Everton boss Koeman is pleased with his choice, having previously worked with Van Dijk at club level when the pair were together at St Mary’s.
“This is a nice step for him.” he said.
“He has a good age and plays at a big club, he can take on this responsibility.” he added.
Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has also been named as one of the vice-captains under his club team-mate along with Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman and Manchester United squad player Daley Blind.
