Hamann backs Van Dijk to shackle Lukaku

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has backed defender Virgil Van Dijk to rise to the challenge at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Holland international will make his first appearance for the club against rivals Manchester United in the key Premier League clash.

And Champions League winner Hamann has backed the Dutchman to do the job of marking United striker Romelu Lukaku in the match.

“He is probably as tall as him, think he’s probably as quick as him, and I don’t think Van Dijk minds a physical challenge.” he said on behalf of TAG Heuer.

“You know you can never keep him out the game for ninety minutes Lukaku, because he is just too powerful and too quick and too strong for that.

“But I think Van Dijk will stand up to that challenge.

“The less service you give Lukaku, or the less you can stop the people giving service to Lukaku the better.” he finished.

Supporters will hope that the former Germany international is right.
