Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has revealed that he wanted to sign Mohamed Salah earlier in the forward’s career.
The Egypt international has been a revelation under Jurgen Klopp’s guidance at Anfield since arriving from Italian club AS Roma last Summer – but he could have been playing elsewhere had the Spaniard got a deal over the line.
”I was following him years ago when he came to England, because I have a friend working in Egypt and we were talking about him.” he said.
“We were talking about this option but obviously you cannot with the money available now.
“He has improved a lot. Klopp is doing a good job.
“He scores goals. We wanted him in Italy and also England and Napoli.” he finished.
Salah had a productive spell playing for both Roma and Fiorentina in Italy before returning to England to become part of Klopp’s squad this season after previously spending time playing for Chelsea from 2014 to 2016.
It is unclear whether Benitez is referring to wanting to sign Salah for Liverpool, Chelsea or Newcastle United when he refers to “England”.
