Former Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho could be set to make a surprise exit from new club Barcelona this Summer.
That’s according to a report by El Pais, in which they claim that Paris Saint Germain are lining up an offer to sign the Brazil international at the end of the season.
The French club are said to be putting in measures to try to persuade Coutinho’s compatriot Neymar from heading back to Spain to sign for Real Madrid in the next year or so.
They are reported to be considering offering French teenager Kylian Mbappe in exchange for Coutinho to try and encourage his international team-mate to stay at the Parc des Princes.
The report claims that Neymar is unhappy with Mbappe and would rather play alongside Coutinho after trying to persuade him to join Barcelona for several months before leaving the Camp Nou himself.
Whether Barcelona would be ready to deal with Paris Saint Germain so soon after Neymar’s acrimonious £200m transfer last Summer remains to be seen, but Coutinho has not hit the ground running since joining them last month.
Should Barcelona decide to take up any potential swap deal offer from the Ligue 1 club, it would have a knock-on effect on the possible performance-related bonus payments Liverpool receive as part of the transfer he made last month.
It is unlikely that this will happen, but it would be annoying to see the club miss out on potential clause payments. The fee for Coutinho was £142m – which comprised of £105m up front and the rest being performance-related extras.
