Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed his long-term plan for defender Joe Gomez.
The German coach has indicated that he sees the England under-21 captain’s future playing in the centre of defence, which will come as no surprise to those who have followed his career to this point.
“Joe Gomez is coming from the centre more, he will in the future play there.” he said.
“He has to improve but is more the defensive part for a full-back.” he added.
Gomez has been playing at right-back this season, in the absence of Nathaniel Clyne, and has rotated with fellow youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold in the role.
Many supporters have been keen to see Gomez play alongside new signing Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the defence and it sounds like Klopp’s long-term idea is to revert him to the centre.
Gomez was touted as ‘the next Rio Ferdinand’ by some onlookers during his youth career at former club Charlton Athletic and it appears that Klopp also sees him as a top centre-back in the making.
