Klopp defends Van Dijk over weight claims

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said he has no issue with Virgil Van Dijk’s weight.

The Holland international has been criticised for being “too big” by former Reds defender Jamie Carragher, who is now a pundit for Sky Sports.

Carragher was speaking on The Debate following the closure of the January transfer window and he said that the Dutchman may be slightly out of shape thanks to a lack of a preseason following his injury problems at Southampton.

“I think it will prove to be a great signing, but he hasn’t hit the ground running.” he said.

“I think he needs to get fit and lose a bit of weight.

“He actually looks too big.

“Maybe that’s to do with not having a pre-season.” he finished.

And Klopp responded to those claims by stating that Carragher could also do with losing “a little bit weight” himself, in his press conference ahead of the Spurs game this weekend.

”Wow! I’m sure Jamie could lose a little bit of weight, but I think Virgil is a big and a tall player.

“No-one came with me and said we need to work with him.”
