Liverpool have offered Philippe Coutinho a bumper new contract and the captain’s armband in a bid to change his mind over his future.
The Brazil international has had his heart set on joining Barcelona since they made a move for him back in the Summer and reports are linking him with a switch to Spain this month.
After he handed in a transfer request back in August, which the club immediately rejected, the twenty-five year old has remained intent on leacving Anfield for the Camp Nou.
Speculation is that Liverpool are prepared to negotiate a deal in the Summer, provided Barcelona make an acceptable offer, but Coutinho is adamant that he should be allowed to join the Catalan club this month.
Some reports have even claimed that he believes he has played his last game for the club and will be on his way to Spain in the coming week or so – but Liverpool have received no offer.
An exit will not be allowed to happen without the approval of manager Jurgen Klopp – who, while being pragmatic about the situation, would still rather keep his star player than see him head to Spain.
While Klopp is aware of Coutinho’s burning desire to play for Barcelona, he would still like to have him at his disposal and so the club have put together a last ditch offer to try and tempt him into staying.
The contract that the former Inter Milan midfielder signed last year would see an increase in wages and bonuses and he would be handed the armband on a permanent basis after captaining the side in a handful of matches recently.
It is believed that he will reject this offer, however.
