Liverpool are preparing an offer to sign Gelson Martins from Champions League outfit Sporting Lisbon.
That is the claim being made in a report by Portuguese newspaper A Bola as clubs approach the winter transfer window next month.
Martins has impressed visiting scouts again this season and has a reported £53m release clause in his contract with his club, which the Reds are happy to meet according to the article.
Liverpool were linked with an offer for Martins back in the Summer, but it amounted to nothing as Egypt international Mohamed Salah was signed from AS Roma instead.
The former Chelsea man has been in blistering form for Jurgen Klopp’s team so far this season and he looks resoundingly like the right signing of the pair.
And that is what makes a bid, especially as the touted price, unlikely for Martins in the new year when Klopp has far bigger priorities than bringing in another wing option.
African attacker Sadio Mane remains one of the first names on the German’s teamsheet and is not going to be replaced by the twenty-two year old Martins any time soon.
The Mirror are claiming that interest in Salah from European champions Real Madrid has seen Liverpool consider alternatives, but there is no chance that contingency plans are being made for this exit after he arrived a matter of months ago.
This looks like wild transfer speculation that will become the norm between now and the end of January.
