Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has backed the club to get a deal done for Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk.
Manager Jurgen Klopp tried, and failed, to bring the Holland international to Anfield in the Summer and has retained a strong interest.
Southampton turned down a transfer request from the former Celtic centre-back as he sought to push through an exit from St Mary’s.
He was told that he would be starting the season with the south coast club, but rumours have been circulating which claim he could be sold in January – and Lawrenson expects Liverpool to land him.
“He knows there is work to be done.” Lawrenson told Newstalk.
“Maybe if not in January, next year.
“Van Dijk will come and sign for Liverpool. They will improve.” he finished.
Manchester City are still monitoring his situation and could complicate any bid from the Reds, given their impressive start to the season.
