Former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt has backed Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk to be a success if he moves to Anfield.

The Holland international has been linked with a January move to Liverpool after he tried to engineer a transfer back in the Summer.

And former Kop favourite Kuyt has given his compatriot the seal of approval.

“I know Virgil. I didn’t play with him in the national team but he’s a great player.” he told Sky Sports.

“We’ll see how things will go in the winter break or at the end of the season.

“I don’t think it’s strange for me to say he is a player who will suit Liverpool very well.

“He has the right mentality and he is a great defender.

“He could do a great job at Liverpool but it’s not for me to say if he would be an improvement or not.

“That’s up to the club.” he finished.

Manager Jurgen Klopp is still keen to bring Van Dijk to the club, but lingering interest from Manchester City will complicate any deal.

  1. I remember my father saying (quite often and generally when playing cards!), “faint heart never won a fair maid”. I don’t think I need to explain but the point is that we look, continue looking but don’t enter the chase having hit the ground running. I don’t think that, if we hit this chase hard enough and on the ground running – and forget the horlicks of illegal contact etc (of which was cleared by the way) – we should say any problem in acquiring VVD. Let’s hope so
