Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has revealed that he has been sent a death threat via social media platform Instagram.
The Croatia international has come in for plenty of criticism for his performances on the pitch of late, especially for the 4-1 loss against Spurs, but this kind of thing is way past the line.
Lovren shared a screenshot where a user threatened to “murder” the twenty-eight year old’s family and the former Lyon and Southampton man has expressed his disgust at this.
“I cannot ignore when my family is threatened.” he said.
“I just can’t and won’t accept that.” he added.
Lovren lasted just over half an hour in the heavy defeat against rivals Spurs last week and manager Jurgen Klopp has since backed his player and turned the table on fans and the media.
“You are the kind of people standing around with smartphones instead of helping. I’m not this kind of person.” he said.
“Of course it’s not the nicest week in Dejan’s life but it’s only football.
“People don’t become a better or a worse person through making a mistake in a football game.” he finished.
Merseyside Police are aware of the matter but they say that there has been no complaint made to them over the incident.
