Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has taken on his first managerial position.

The ex-Spain international playmaker will become boss of Tango Squad FC – a team of grassroots footballers put together by German sports brand Adidas.

Tango Squad FC was created last year and will be the focus of a television documentary series over the coming months.

Alonso had some words for his new squad:

“Guys, congratulations, you have proven yourself in the trials. This is just the beginning.” he said.

“As your manager, I will be with you all the way. Let’s get to work – don’t play games.” he added.

Alonso retired at the end of last season after spending the last few years of his illustrious career playing for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in Germany.
