Meyer has been impressing for Schalke

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is set to reignite his interest in Schalke player Max Meyer.

That is according to a report in The Mirror today, who claim that the German international has come back into Klopp’s thinking after Philippe Coutinho handed in a transfer request.

The twenty-one year old has just one more season remaining on his contract with the Bundesliga club and has rejected all offers of an extension from the German club so far.

It is reported in the article that “sources” near to Meyer say that he would be open to the prospect of a move to Anfield to work under compatriot Klopp having been impressed with his previous work with Schalke’s rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Klopp even tried to lure Meyer to Dortmund when the midfielder was a teenager, but he was unable to secure a deal – so it goes to show how long he has been tracking the player.

Liverpool could potentially face some stiff competition for Meyer, should Klopp decide to lodge a bid, as Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are both interested in signing him.

But Spurs are putting their main focus on to securing a deal for Everton’s England international midfielder Ross Barkley – who also has just a year left on his contract and is likely to cost around £50m.
