Manchester City have seized the initiative in the race to sign Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy.
That’s according to The Express, who are reporting that City have opened discussions with the French champions over a £38m deal for the left-back.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is reported to be keen to bring the twenty-two year old to Anfield to solve his own issues in the position, but it looks like Pep Guardiola is on course to land Mendy this Summer.
Manchester United are also reported to have met the asking price for the France international, but it looks like City are in pole position to get a deal completed.
Guardiola has let three full-backs move on from the Etihad this Summer, with Gael Clichy, Pablo Zabaleta and Bakary Sagna all released following the expiration of their contracts.
Barcelona are also said to have been monitoring Mendy, but a left-back is not seen as a priority at the Camp Nou this Summer.
It looks like Klopp will also need to start looking elsewhere if he wants to have a specialist left-back in his squad for the 2017/18 campaign.
