Chequebook time? Five players who could land at Anfield this summer

With a matter of a few weeks remaining until the Premier League season ends, all eyes will then be turned towards the summer transfer window, with Reds boss, Jurgen Klopp having money to spend on new recruits. The Reds may have lost at Crystal Palace last time out but remaining fixtures are relatively kind and they remain a top tip for pundits at the climax of 2017/18.

Qualification for next season’s Champions League would be a huge boost for everyone connected with Anfield – and it would likely offer more opportunity of securing some of the best players in Europe and beyond to challenge Europe’s elite clubs once again.

In this article, we will look at five players who could be on Klopp’s radar as the German will look to improve his squad for next season.

    Another express train

With the speedy, free-flowing attacking players that Liverpool already possess in Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino et al, another one – Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki Williams could be on the way to Merseyside this summer. The Spanish u21 international has scored just four La Liga goals this season from 31 appearances, but that hasn’t dissuaded many top clubs from chasing his signature. Borussia Dortmund and Juventus are also being heavily linked with the versatile forward, who reportedly has a buyout clause of £42.7m. Klopp is said to be a huge fan of the 22 year-old who can perform in a wide-right role along with the main striking position.

    Scouts flocking

Atalanta’s highly rated midfielder Frank Kessie is another sought after talent throughout Europe, and Liverpool are reported to be in the running for the 20 year-old’s services. Kessie’s all-action performances have had the scouts flocking in recent months to watch the Ivory Coast international as his stock has risen with almost every passing week. Klopp’s ability to nurture promising young talent could tempt Kessie and his advisors to plump for a move to Anfield this summer and the player would fit in perfectly with the German’s pressing style – and add further goals from midfield.

    Left-back option?

One position that surely will be looked at by Klopp in the close season is left-back, and although James Milner has provided admirable versatility in the position this season, it would be a surprise if the Liverpool boss did not look to strengthen in the area over the summer. Klopp could return to the Bundesliga to recruit Schalke’s Sead Kolašinac to offer extra options. The 23 year-old Bosnia and Herzegovinian international has been a mainstay in the Schalke back-line in recent seasons, and can be said to be one of the best prospects of his position in Europe. Schalke are currently languishing in mid-table and a move to the Premier League could be an offer the defender would find difficult to refuse.

    Moving north?

Arsenal are a club who could go through many changes over the summer, and Liverpool may look to offer their England midfield man, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a route away from the Emirates Stadium. Liverpool – and Klopp in particular – have long been admirers of the versatile 23 year-old, who has never truly held down a regular starting berth for Arsene Wenger’s side. With just twelve months remaining on his current contract, Liverpool could look to bring in ‘The Ox’ for a reported figure of around £20m.

    Defensive decisions

The Reds have decisions to make over the summer with Lucas Leiva expected to leave Merseyside and on-loan defender Mamadou Sakho’s future at Crystal Palace still to be sorted. Sakho has been influential in Palace’s recent upturn in form, and has also suggested that he would hope to continue his Liverpool career if he can convince Klopp. However, the German may decide to cut ties with the French international, so he could look at Fenerbahce’s Simon Kjaer as an alternative option. The Danish star has reportedly been scouted extensively by Liverpool in recent months and could be bought at around £17m.
