Liverpool and Manchester United are set to fight it out for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.
That’s according to a report by Don Balon, who are claiming that the Premier League clubs will both make moves for the Uruguay international at the end of the season.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has put Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk at the top of his defensive target list, but Gimenez could prove to be a cheaper alternative to the Southampton man.
United manager Jose Mourinho is also on the lookout for a new central defender and has also identified Gimenez as one to make a bid for when the campaign finishes.
Gimenez has lost his place at the heart of Diego Simeone’s Atletico defence and has recently been sitting on the subs bench, so could fancy the chance to stake a claim for a first-team place elsewhere.
He is still just twenty-two years old and has plenty of time left in his career.
